Imagener MethodsKnowing about photo enlargement methods will help you get the most out of Imagener. All 7 methods are in the Unlimited version, 3 that you'll find in most photo software and the 4 additional sophisticated Kneson methods.
Kneson's Imagener is technology that greatly extends beyond interpolation methods provided in Photoshop® and other photo software programs. The graphic above shows the portion of the Imagener Unlimited screen that lists 4 revolutionary enlargement engines for photo enlargement. Photoshop® and the other programs only provide simple interpolation when used to make pictures bigger.
“Interpolation” is a process that simply copies pixels to enlarge photos. Interpolation means “the computation of pixel color values between the pixels that already exist.” All software programs (besides Imagener) that enlarge photos still use these 3 old interpolation methods:
Nearest Neighbor Interpolation
Pixels or dots of color are duplicated to each side of existing pixels to create new pixels increasing the image size. This is the least accurate method of enlarging an image. It creates obvious "pixilation": edges that break up curves into steps or jagged corners.
Bilinear Interpolation
Bilinear interpolation smooths jagged edges by filtering pixels giving image edges a smoother look than nearest neighbor interpolation. Four surrounding pixels provide the color values for the enlargement.
Bicubic Interpolation
Bicubic interpolation analyzes 16 surrounding pixels for enlargement. This method produces smoother results than the previous two and is mathematically more sophisticated. However even images enlarged with bicubic interpolation quickly degrade above 150%.

Enlarging pictures beyond the simple, crude methods provided in popular photo software requires technology like Imagener specifically designed to intelligently make pictures bigger. See our 20% off sale on Unlimited products here.

Create posters from any photo - even ones you take

Are pictures trapped in your smartphone you’d like displayed? There are many ways to create posters from smartphone photos, but keep in mind these three topics:

  1. Photo Quality
  2. Photo Enlargement Options
  3. Poster Mounting

Photo Quality:

Images must be at least 200 dots per inch (DPI). This is known as image resolution. Web page graphics are too low to enlarge well. They're usually 72 or 96 DPI. Consider higher resolution stock or DSLR camera photos for enlargement.
Photo Enlargement Options:
Always start with an image no less than 200 DPI. Among several ways to enlarge digital pictures, incrementally enlarging in Photoshop® is widely used, but even the most recent versions of Photoshop use crude interpolation methods. Software specifically designed for photo enlargement provides crisper, more realistic results.
We've made major renovations to both Imagener.com and YottaPrint.com, changes we hope will better communicate the potential of our photo enlargement software products.
